Wasp spider recorded in Cheshire, signalling climate‑driven range shift

A female Argiope bruennichi, commonly called the wasp spider, has been documented for the first time in Cheshire. The arachnid, native to continental Europe, North Africa and parts of Asia, was discovered by Chester Zoo conservation staff in a re‑wilded field, marking an unprecedented sighting in northern England.

Scientists view the appearance of this brightly coloured, venomous spider as an indicator of warming temperatures enabling species to expand northwards. The trend raises concerns about potential impacts on local ecosystems and native wildlife as climate change reshapes species distributions across the UK.
