German battery storage firm Sonnen files for insolvency after Shell sale

Sonnen GmbH, the German battery storage manufacturer acquired by family office Tiven from Shell this summer, has filed for insolvency, according to Germany’s Handelsblatt. Approximately 400 employees were notified of the filing on Thursday, and while the official register notice is pending, the company confirmed the proceedings.

The firm plans to maintain service for its more than 150,000 customers, but many subsidiaries are expected to be liquidated or enter self‑administration insolvency. Only a single production plant is slated to stay operational. Sonnen has not responded to further comment requests, and its German communications agency also declined to discuss the post‑acquisition strategy.
