Coca‑Cola, Nestlé and Danone pledge to revise recycling claims after EU greenwashing probe

After a European Consumer Organisation (BEUC) alert in November 2023 accusing them of misleading recyclability statements, Coca‑Cola, Nestlé and Danone have agreed to amend the wording on their plastic‑bottle packaging. The companies engaged in discussions with the European Commission and the Consumer Protection Cooperation network, acknowledging that claims such as “100% recyclable” or “100% recycled” can be inaccurate given current collection infrastructure, sorting efficiency and material composition.

Dialogue concluded for Coca‑Cola in June 2025, for Nestlé in February 2026, and Danone announced its commitments this month. BEUC Director‑General Agustín Reyna welcomed the move, emphasizing the need for trustworthy environmental messaging to protect consumers from deceptive green claims.
