The federal government has pledged C$25 million over five years to help Quebec protect its woodland caribou, a keystone species whose numbers have fallen to roughly half of their 2016 levels. An additional C$15 million is earmarked for First Nations communities whose territories host the herds, reflecting growing pressure from Indigenous groups, scientists and environmental NGOs for stronger action.
Despite the new funding, provincial officials have yet to agree on a detailed recovery strategy, and critics warn that without a clear plan the money may not translate into effective conservation measures. The lack of a coordinated approach raises concerns that the species could continue its decline, jeopardising both biodiversity and the cultural significance of caribou for local Indigenous peoples.
