Albania Benefits from EU CBAM While Serbia and Bosnia Face Higher Carbon Costs

Albania’s largely low‑carbon electricity mix is giving its exporters a competitive edge under the European Union’s Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM). The mechanism, which taxes imports based on their embedded carbon emissions, favours producers that rely on cleaner energy sources, allowing Albanian firms to avoid the additional charges that apply to higher‑emission competitors.

In contrast, Serbia and Bosnia and Herzegovina are expected to encounter significant cost increases. Both countries depend heavily on coal‑fired power and carbon‑intensive industries, exposing their exporters to the full impact of CBAM tariffs. Analysts warn that the added expenses could erode profit margins and reduce the attractiveness of their goods in EU markets.
